BOSTON — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested a Brazilian national convicted of aggravated murder in his home country during a targeted enforcement operation earlier this month at the Westborough District Court in Massachusetts.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, officers with Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston arrested Maycon Souto Dos Reis on August 3 at Westborough District Court.
Brazilian authorities issued an arrest warrant for Dos Reis on September 14, 2024, after he was convicted of aggravated murder and sentenced to 14 years and three months in prison, ICE said.
ICE says arrest followed Massachusetts traffic offense
ICE officials said Dos Reis came to the agency’s attention following his May 29 arrest in Southborough, Massachusetts, on a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
According to ICE, Dos Reis entered the United States illegally on June 7, 2024, and was later released into the country.
“This is yet another example of what the media often characterizes as a non-criminal, when in reality, many of these individuals are murderers, sexual predators, gang members and more,” said acting ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston Field Office Director David Wesling. “They simply do not have a criminal record in the United States.”
ICE says deportation proceedings are pending
Wesling said the agency will continue targeting criminal offenders who are in the country illegally.
“We will continue to pursue these dangerous criminal aliens that sanctuary politicians fight to protect,” Wesling said.
ICE said Dos Reis will remain in federal custody while deportation proceedings move forward.
The Department of Homeland Security also reiterated its immigration enforcement policy, stating, “If you come to our country illegally and break our laws, we will find you, arrest you, and you will never return. Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the United States.”
