A road rage confrontation in Lakewood escalated into a violent assault Friday afternoon, sending one driver to the hospital and another to the Ocean County Jail on an aggravated assault charge, police said.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. — A Toms River man was arrested after police say a road rage dispute turned violent following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Chestnut Street in Lakewood on Friday afternoon.

According to the Lakewood Police Department, officers responded to the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle crash and an assault.

Road rage escalated after crash, police say

Investigators determined the incident began as a road rage confrontation between two motorists before escalating into a collision involving both vehicles.

Police allege that after the crash, one of the drivers confronted the other motorist, slammed the victim’s face into the side of a vehicle, and then struck him again, causing him to lose consciousness.

The victim suffered a small laceration and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The entire incident was caught on camera and shared by the Lakewood Scoop.

Toms River man jailed on aggravated assault charge

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Thomas Vance, 39, of Toms River, and charged him with aggravated assault.

Vance was transported to the Ocean County Jail and is being held pending further court proceedings.

Lakewood Police Chief Gregory H. Meyer urged motorists to avoid allowing emotions to take over during traffic disputes.

“Road rage incidents can escalate very quickly and have serious consequences,” Meyer said. “We ask motorists to remain calm, avoid engaging with aggressive drivers, and contact law enforcement if they feel threatened or unsafe. No disagreement on the roadway is worth someone getting hurt or ending up in jail.”

The investigation remains active.
