Aida Alvarado’s mother and father face child abuse and assault charges while additional homicide charges remain possible
BALTIMORE, MD – A 2-month-old Baltimore baby died after suffering trauma to her body, leading homicide detectives to arrest both of her 21-year-old parents on child abuse and assault charges while investigators await an autopsy that could result in additional homicide charges.
Officers responded to Harbor Hospital at approximately 1:08 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an infant death.
Police said 2-month-old Aida Alvarado had been pronounced dead by hospital medical staff.
Members of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner responded and recovered the infant’s remains.
Preliminary findings indicated Aida had suffered trauma to her body, according to Baltimore Police.
Homicide detectives then responded to the infant’s home and took her mother and father into custody.
Police identified the parents as Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, 21, and Oscar Pineda, 21.
Both were interviewed by homicide detectives.
Following those interviews and consultation with the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, police criminally charged both parents.
Monzon-Alvarado and Pineda each face first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment charges.
Baltimore Police said additional homicide charges are pending the outcome of the autopsy report.
Both parents remained at Central Booking when police announced the arrests Friday.
The current charges are accusations, and Monzon-Alvarado and Pineda are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
