Parolee Charged for Brutally Stabbing Elderly Woman in Bronx Elevator

May 3, 2024

BRONX, NY – Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the indictment of parolee Edwin Rios, 38, on charges of Attempted Murder in the second degree and other related charges. The indictment follows a brutal attack on a 75-year-old woman, Zenona Ramos, inside an elevator in her own building on Morris Avenue, where Rios allegedly stabbed her repeatedly, puncturing her lung.

The attack, captured on surveillance video, occurred on Sunday, March 31, at approximately 11:23 AM. The footage shows Rios following Ramos into the elevator before assaulting her with what appears to be a knife, striking her around 40 to 50 times across her head, face, and body. Despite severe injuries, including a punctured lung and the need for 40 stitches to her hands, Ramos survived after undergoing a blood transfusion.

Rios, last residing at 1430 Waters Place, faces multiple charges including two counts of first-degree Assault, three counts of second-degree Assault, third-degree Assault, fourth-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, and second-degree Harassment. He was arraigned before Bronx Supreme Court Justice Brenda Rivera, with his remand continued. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 18.
