Paterson Receives State Funding for Youth Boxing Programs

September 26, 2024

Trenton, NJ — Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (SACB) Commissioner Larry Hazzard, Sr. have announced the selection of two Paterson boxing clubs to receive grant funding for conducting amateur boxing programs for youth in the city.

The after-school programs, benefiting nearly two dozen youth, will be held at True Warriors Boxing and Fitness Club and Pound4Pound Fitness. Scheduled to last three hours per session, three days per week, the grant provides $65,000 for one year of programming.

Participants will receive training in boxing and physical fitness, along with instruction in nutrition, wellness, and life skills. These boxing programs in Paterson follow successful initiatives in Atlantic City and Trenton, also focused on providing productive, safe spaces for youth.

Attorney General Platkin remarked that the program’s benefits extend into various areas of a youth’s life, citing the discipline and self-confidence boxing fosters. Commissioner Larry Hazzard, Sr. emphasized boxing’s role in creating mental fitness, emotional well-being, and goal-setting skills.

The program will be managed by the Paterson Police Department under Lieutenant Sharon Easton.
