Pennsylvania Governor Opposes Calls To Ask Fetterman To Resign

Nino Cambria on February 23, 2023

Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro stood by Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman following his second hospitalization in a month in an interview Tuesday.

In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Shapiro said he would not ask Fetterman to resign and would resist any pressure to do so. Fetterman has had numerous physical and mental health scares since taking office.

“He’s going to get the help that he needs, and do a great job for the people of Pennsylvania as their senator for a long time,” Shapiro told the Philadelphia Inquirer. He added that he has not received calls to ask the senator to resign, “And if I did, I would dismiss it immediately.”

Fetterman has grappled with health issues since he suffered a stroke last May while campaigning for the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate nomination. Days later, he won the nomination and did not reappear on the campaign trail until August, making noticeable gaffes before his November victory against the Republican Dr. Mehment Oz.

Since taking office, health concerns have continued to be raised after Fetterman was hospitalized earlier this month after feeling “lightheaded.” Soon after, one of the senator’s top aides told The New York Times that getting back on the campaign trail so quickly may have caused “permanent damage.”

Fetterman checked into Walter Reed Hospital last week for clinical depression, where he remains.

“Senator Fetterman will not be resigning,” a spokesperson from his office told the DCNF.
