PERTH AMBOY, NJ – Members of the Perth Amboy Fire Department joined the community for the city’s annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting, using the event to share important reminders about fire safety during the festive season.
Officials said while holiday celebrations bring families together, they also present seasonal fire hazards that can be avoided with simple precautions.
Firefighters urged residents to keep Christmas trees properly watered and away from heat sources, and to dispose of them promptly after the holidays.
They also warned against leaving candles unattended and advised residents to always extinguish them before going to sleep.
Fire safety tips for lights and decorations
The department reminded residents to inspect all holiday light strands for frayed wires or damage, to follow manufacturer guidelines when connecting multiple strands, and to use indoor and outdoor lights only in their designated environments.
All lights should be unplugged before bedtime, and only certified extension cords should be used to power decorations. Firefighters cautioned residents not to overload electrical outlets.
Battery-powered gifts and home alarms

Officials also advised residents purchasing lithium-ion battery-powered gifts to ensure products are UL certified and to charge them according to manufacturer directions.
The department emphasized the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in every home and keeping all exits clear in case of emergency.
The Perth Amboy Fire Department, along with Mayor Caba, the Fire Officers Association, and the Professional Firefighters Association, encouraged everyone to celebrate safely and make fire prevention part of their holiday traditions.
