Phil Murphy Celebrates Career of U.S. Senator That Ended with 11 Year Prison Sentence for Political Corruption

TRENTON, N.J. — Gov. Phil Murphy reflected on the career of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez on Wednesday, marking the end of the longtime lawmaker’s tenure following his sentencing to 11 years in prison on federal corruption charges.

“Senator Menendez accomplished many things on behalf of our state and our residents, but sadly he will be remembered for putting his own interests and financial gain ahead of the public interest,” Murphy said in a statement.

Menendez, a Democrat who served in the U.S. Senate since 2006, was convicted of accepting bribes, including cash and gold bars, in exchange for political favors. Prosecutors said he used his influence to benefit foreign governments and businessmen while serving as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Murphy emphasized the importance of accountability in government, saying, “At a time when our country is deeply divided, it is critical that we hold our elected leaders to the highest professional and ethical standards.”

Menendez’s sentencing marks a dramatic downfall for the once-powerful senator, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial but ultimately faced the consequences of his actions.
