BRICK TOWNSHIP-Since 2011, Democrats in Brick Township have swept every single election at town hall and this year, they are hoping to keep their blue wave rolling. The Democrats announced the candidacy of incumbents Art Halloran, Lisa Crate, and Andrea Zapcic. The three are part of the Ducey Team, staunch allies of Governor Phil Murphy. Joining the incumbents will be Teamster Vincent Minichino.
The takeover of Brick Township from Republicans was masterminded over the years by Democrat consultant and operative Mitch Seim, a former Lakewood Township County Democrat Committeeman, but Seim could be facing his first legitimate opposition after being dealt severe blows in 2018, losing badly in elections in neighboring Jackson and Howell Township. Seim serves as consigliere to Mayor John Ducey and the Brick Democrat Council, according to insiders in the party.
Finding Democrat votes in Brick Township might be harder this year for Seim and his team after state Democrats have seized millions of dollars in school funding from the local school district. Brick Township School District is now suing the state and Governor Phil Murphy to restore funding taken from the students by the budget crafted by Steve Sweeney and Murphy. Despite having complete control over the Brick Township governing bodies, local Democrats have been unable to persuade Murphy to reinstate funding after months of protests and talks.
