John Olson, 44, faces child sexual abuse material charges after investigators say a forensic examination uncovered images that appeared to come from cameras inside children’s bedrooms
POINT PLEASANT, NJ – A Point Pleasant Borough man whose home previously served as a foster home has been indicted after investigators allegedly discovered nude images of children that appeared to have been captured by cameras installed in children’s bedrooms, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
John Olson, 44, was indicted Wednesday by an Ocean County grand jury on one count of distribution of child sexual abuse material, four counts of manufacturing child sexual abuse material and one count of possession of child sexual abuse material.
The investigation began with a referral from the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The task force had received a cyber-tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children concerning an individual allegedly sending and receiving child sexual abuse images over the internet.
Investigators with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad traced an IP address associated with that activity to a Point Pleasant Borough residence, prosecutors said.
The activity allegedly involved a Kik Messenger account. Investigators subsequently located an image of child sexual abuse material that prosecutors allege Olson uploaded and sent through Kik.
On Aug. 22, 2025, detectives from the High Tech Crime Squad, Point Pleasant Police Department and Ocean County Regional SWAT Team executed a court-authorized search warrant at Olson’s residence.
Several electronic devices were seized.
During the investigation, detectives learned the residence had previously served as a foster home and that cameras were installed in the children’s bedrooms, according to prosecutors.
Olson was initially charged that day with distribution and possession of child sexual abuse material and taken to the Ocean County Jail.
A full forensic examination of the seized electronics later revealed that a cellphone belonging to Olson allegedly contained nude images of children that appeared to have been taken by cameras in the children’s bedrooms, prosecutors said.
Additional charges were filed Aug. 28, 2025.
Olson was released from the Ocean County Jail on Aug. 29, 2026, under New Jersey’s bail system, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Wednesday’s grand jury action formally indicted Olson on the distribution, manufacturing and possession charges.
The investigation involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, Point Pleasant Borough Police Department, Ocean County Regional SWAT Team, New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The charges are accusations. Olson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
