CHESAPEAKE, VA — A homicide investigation is underway after a man’s body was found in the water at the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail on Sunday afternoon.

Chesapeake Police responded to a call at approximately 12:44 p.m. reporting a body in the water near the park entrance at 1200 George Washington Highway. Upon arrival, the department’s Underwater Search and Rescue Team (USART) retrieved the male victim from the shoreline.

Authorities determined the man had what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Detectives have classified the case as a homicide and are working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the death.
