Queen Anne’s County woman wins $50,000 in Powerball Double Play after adding extra draw

STEVENSVILLE, MD – A Queen Anne’s County woman’s decision to spend an extra dollar on her Powerball ticket turned into a $50,000 win in the Jan. 5 Double Play drawing, the Maryland Lottery announced Monday.

The longtime player, who has been using the same Powerball numbers since November 2024, decided recently to start adding the Double Play option to her tickets. That $1 addition allowed her to participate in the second drawing held about 30 minutes after the main Powerball results — and it made all the difference.

Although her numbers missed in the main drawing, she matched four of the first five white balls and the red Powerball in the Double Play round, securing a $50,000 prize. She purchased her ticket at the Sunoco Truck Stop at 400 Thompson Creek Road in Stevensville, selecting number combinations based on dates meaningful to her and her loved ones.

The winner said she checked the results from bed using the Maryland Lottery app and “freaked out” after realizing she had matched nearly all of the Double Play numbers. After confirming the win, she called several family members to share the news.

A grocery store manager by profession, the player said she plans to use the prize money as part of her savings toward a new home. In her free time, she enjoys relaxing with her dogs.
