BALTIMORE, Md. — A 22-year-old repeat violent offender has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman on Mother’s Day in Baltimore’s Southwest District, police announced.
Tamal Johnson was taken into custody on May 22 by Warrant Apprehension detectives and the U.S. Marshals Service in the 3000 block of Elizabeth Avenue. He has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, conspiracy, and multiple firearm violations. Johnson is currently being held without bail.
The charges stem from the May 11 killing of 23-year-old Taniya Gray, who was found inside a vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 4100 block of Mountwood Road. Officers responded to the area at approximately 10:41 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
Gray was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Investigators have not released a motive in the case or indicated whether the victim and suspect knew each other. Details about any co-conspirators or the firearm used have also not been made public.
Johnson, described by authorities as a repeat violent offender, was swiftly located and apprehended less than two weeks after the homicide. The arrest was part of a coordinated effort between Baltimore police and federal law enforcement.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
