TOMS RIVER, NJ– David Richter, Republican candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s Third District, criticized his opponent, tax raiser, career politician and union leader, Kate Gibbs.
Citing the Reason Foundation, SaveJersey.com is reporting “that the Garden State redirects 33.9% of its gas tax revenue – $360 million – to non-road related expenditures. Only New York (37.5%) and Rhode Island (37.1%) divert higher percentages of their gas tax revenue.”
Richter said, “New Jersey – in the midst of a fiscal crisis – should be taking a long hard look within in order to find and eliminate waste, not raising taxes. Unfortunately, my opponent doesn’t know how to do that. Just like she has throughout her career when Kate Gibbs raised taxes on the hard-working residents of Burlington County, she fought alongside her union to raise our gas tax $0.23/gallon. Prior to that increase, gas prices in NJ were some of the lowest in the country. Now, we are in the top-10 most expensive. More recently Gibbs chose to support Phil Murphy and pushed through a ridiculous toll increase that will only punish the commuters of the Third District and all of New Jersey.”
He concluded, “Improving our infrastructure is a worthy cause, but we should be increasing how efficient we are with the taxpayers’ money, not increasing taxes even further on the highest taxed residents in the country. Shame on Kate Gibbs for putting her union ahead of the residents of the Third District.”
Richter is the former CEO of global construction management firm Hill International. During his time at the company, Hill grew from a struggling family business with less than 300 employees into a successful public company with more than 4,300 employees. A lifelong Republican, Richter grew up in and has spent most of his life living and working in the Third District. He earned two bachelor’s degrees and a law degree from Penn as well as master’s degrees from Oxford and Harvard. Richter and his wife Michelle, who have been married for 20 years, are the parents of four daughters.
