TRENTON, N.J. — Traffic conditions across New Jersey remained congested Thursday, with lane closures from road repairs and volume-related backups affecting several major highways and river crossings.
As of early Thursday afternoon, roving roadwork was reported on U.S. Route 130 northbound in Burlington County, where the left lane was closed from Cooper Street (CR 630) in Willingboro Township through to north of Florence-Columbus Road (CR 656) in Mansfield Township. Similar repairs were underway on Route 35 northbound in Monmouth County, with one right lane closed between Eatontown and Keyport.
Earlier in the morning, traffic along I-295 northbound moved slowly between Exit 61 at Arena Drive in Hamilton Township and Exit 67 at U.S. Route 1 in Lawrence Township. Though all lanes were open, drivers encountered noticeable volume in that stretch.
Significant delays persisted on the New Jersey Turnpike, particularly on the northbound Western and Eastern Spurs. Around 8:20 a.m., traffic was backed up for approximately two miles between the Southern Mixing Bowl and just south of Interchange 15W (I-280) in Newark. The outer roadway near Interchange 13A, which serves Newark Liberty International Airport and U.S. 1&9 in Elizabeth, was also congested due to morning volume.
Eastbound traffic entering the Hudson County Extension at Interchange 14 (I-78) in Newark experienced additional delays tied to heavy flow through the corridor.
Congestion also extended to the Hudson River crossings. The George Washington Bridge lower level eastbound carried a 20-minute delay by 8:08 a.m., with all lanes open. The upper level was slower, with eastbound drivers facing a 25-minute travel time from I-95 at I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.
Motorists across the state faced a mix of construction-related lane closures and typical weekday congestion as traffic volume remained steady into the afternoon.
