NEWARK, NJ – A group of Rutgers University police officers is being credited with saving a person in crisis after they responded to a mental health emergency on the ledge of a Newark parking facility over the weekend.

The incident occurred Saturday when Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) officers were dispatched to assist an individual experiencing acute distress and threatening self-harm. Responding officers R. Applegate, L. Gonzalez, J. Mandal, H. Masri, and G. Valente engaged the person in calm, measured communication before safely guiding them away from danger. The individual was then transported for medical evaluation and care.

RUPD officials commended the officers’ teamwork and restraint, describing their actions as a model of compassionate, community-centered policing. The department said the outcome underscores the importance of crisis intervention training and rapid coordination during mental health emergencies.
