Sandy Spring Woman Wins $5,000 in Lottery Promotion

September 19, 2024

BALTIMORE, MD – Ethel Young of Sandy Spring won a $5,000 prize as a second-chance winner in the Maryland Lottery’s Cash Heatwave promotion.

The second-chance promotion awarded $125,000 in total cash prizes to 20 winners during the summer. The hotter the weather, the higher the prize amounts, with high temperatures fueling the winnings.

Young’s prize was selected during the week from Aug. 19 to Aug. 25, when temperatures reached 88 degrees. She initially entered a few Pick game tickets into her My Lottery Rewards account to earn rewards points, unknowingly entering the second-chance promotion.

Young, a casual player whose friends encouraged her to create a My Lottery Rewards account, is the first in her group to win a cash prize. She plans to use the money for home repairs and donate a portion to her church.
