A 10X symbol transformed a $5,000 prize into the game’s top payout
HYATTSVILLE, MD – A retired construction worker who initially saw little reason to celebrate after scratching his lottery ticket got a $50,000 shock when he scanned it, revealing that a 10X symbol had quietly delivered one of the biggest prizes available in the Maryland Lottery game.
The Hyattsville man purchased the winning 20X the Cash scratch-off at Hillandale Beer & Wine, located at 10117 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring.
According to the Maryland Lottery, the Prince George’s County resident did not initially believe the ticket was a winner.
Scanner reveals $50K surprise
Instead of tossing the ticket aside, he scanned it to check the result.
The scanner showed a $50,000 win.
Although none of his numbers matched, the ticket contained a 10X symbol paired with a $5,000 prize. Under the game’s rules, the symbol multiplied that amount by 10, producing the $50,000 top prize.
The winner told Lottery officials he was shocked by the result.
Car and mortgage could benefit
The retired construction worker said he plans to put some of his winnings toward a car.
He may use the remaining money to pay down his mortgage.
Hillandale Beer & Wine will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top-prize ticket.
The 20X the Cash scratch-off launched in January with seven $50,000 top prizes. Following this win, one $50,000 top prize remains unclaimed, according to the Lottery.
Additional unclaimed prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000 also remain in the game.
