Screwdriver attack at Harbor Freight leads police to 74-year-old suspect

DOVER, DE — A 74-year-old Dover man is facing felony charges after allegedly confronting another man with a screwdriver outside a shopping center on Friday afternoon.

Delaware State Police arrested Peter Reidy following an altercation in the parking lot of Rodney Village Shopping Center on South Governors Avenue. According to authorities, troopers responded to the scene around 1:58 p.m. after receiving reports of an assault.

When officers arrived, they found Reidy, who appeared intoxicated and had been sprayed with pepper spray. Police said Reidy had aggressively approached a man near the entrance of Harbor Freight as the victim exited his vehicle. Inside the car were a woman and two children.

Troopers reported that Reidy grabbed the man and pushed him against the vehicle. The woman in the car then used pepper spray on Reidy to stop the attack. No injuries were reported by the victim.

Reidy was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment before being taken to Delaware State Police Troop 3 for processing.

Felony charges and custody status

Following his release from medical care, Reidy was charged with felony aggravated menacing, endangering the welfare of a child, and other related offenses. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $47,201 secured bond.

According to police, “Reidy was disorderly in the parking lot and aggressively approached the male victim in front of Harbor Freight with a screwdriver.”

The victim declined medical attention at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details about the woman or children involved.

Police say the investigation into the incident remains active.
