Seaside Heights Officers Honored for Actions During Armed Domestic Violence Incident

Five members of the Seaside Heights Police Department received Meritorious Service Awards for their response to a high-risk domestic violence incident that led to the safe arrest of an armed suspect.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — The Seaside Heights Police Department has recognized Sergeant Hershey, Patrolman Leahy and Class II Officers Emmets, Beebe and Trezza with Meritorious Service Awards for their actions during a dangerous domestic violence incident last year.

The awards stem from an incident that occurred on Nov. 24, 2024, when officers responded to what police described as a high-risk domestic violence situation involving an armed suspect.

According to the department, the officers acted quickly to protect a victim who was facing imminent harm while working to prevent the suspect from gaining access to a loaded firearm.

Officers credited with protecting victim

Police said the responding officers demonstrated teamwork, professionalism and courage throughout the incident.

“Through swift action, teamwork, and bravery under pressure, they protected a victim from imminent harm and safely apprehended an armed suspect attempting to access a loaded firearm,” the department said in a statement announcing the awards.

Officials said the officers’ actions helped bring the situation under control without further injury and ensured the safety of everyone involved.

Meritorious Service Awards recognize exceptional actions

The Meritorious Service Award is presented to officers whose actions go beyond the normal expectations of duty and demonstrate exceptional service to the public and their fellow officers.

Department leaders praised the group for their response and commitment to protecting the community.

“Congratulations to all involved on this well-deserved recognition,” the department said. “Your courage and commitment do not go unnoticed.”

The officers were formally recognized for their efforts during a recent awards presentation.
