SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ — As Memorial Day weekend approaches, marking the unofficial start of summer along the Jersey Shore, Seaside Heights is gearing up to maintain order following years of rowdy behavior during the holiday. The borough is enforcing a strict curfew and new short-term rental restrictions to curb the chaos often associated with the weekend, which frequently coincides with prom season and summer.
A pop-up party scheduled by North Jersey teens spread this week like wildfire on TikTok, prompting a court decision to block the event and to allow the borough to strictly enforce its juvenile curfew laws.
In 2024, Seaside Heights saw unrest, with 90 arrests, including a dozen minors, after a false report of shots fired sparked widespread disorder. Past years have also been challenging: 2023 saw fights and disruptive behavior prompting a curfew.
To address these recurring issues, Seaside Heights has implemented stringent measures. A borough-wide curfew, in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, prohibits anyone under 18 from being on the streets or boardwalk unless accompanied by a parent or guardian or heading home from work.
“All minors will be directed to turn around and go home,” said Borough Administrator Christopher Vaz. “We will enforce from the streets and the beach.”
Additionally, an ordinance effective in 2024 restricts short-term rentals from April 15 to June 30, requiring at least two people aged 21 or older, or one person 25 or older, to be present on the premises. This measure aims to prevent post-prom parties and pop-up gatherings that have exacerbated problems in recent years. Code enforcement officers will patrol neighborhoods, actively checking for overcrowding and rental age violations in apartments, motels, and homes.
Vaz emphasized accountability, delivering a clear message to parents: “Keep your kids home. We’re not babysitting for you. If they cause a problem, you will be held responsible as their parents.”
With these proactive steps, Seaside Heights is determined to ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend for residents and visitors alike, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behavior.
