Senior Cat Surrendered After Family Move Now Faces Possible Cancer Diagnosis

Associated Humane Societies is seeking a rescue partner for Mimi, a 10-year-old cat who was surrendered after her family moved and has since been found with a potentially cancerous mammary mass.

Newark, NJ – A 10-year-old cat surrendered to the Associated Humane Societies shelter in Newark after her family moved is now facing another challenge after veterinarians discovered a mammary mass that may be cancerous.

The shelter is urgently seeking a rescue organization willing to take in Mimi so she can receive the care she needs outside of the crowded shelter environment.

Shelter says Mimi deserves a second chance

According to Associated Humane Societies, Mimi spent her entire life with one family before being surrendered when they relocated.

“10 year old Mimi was surrendered to the shelter when her family moved. We were devastated for this girl who lost everything she’s ever known,” the shelter wrote.

Following a veterinary examination, staff learned Mimi may be facing a serious health issue.

“Shelter vets have now discovered a small mammary mass which may be cancerous. Mimi is incredibly sweet and deserves to live the rest of her life in the care of a loving home, not in an overcrowded shelter.”

Rescue organizations asked to help

Associated Humane Societies is asking licensed rescue groups that may be able to assist Mimi to contact the shelter as soon as possible.

“Rescues — if you can help Mimi please contact us at mkuzmenko@ahsppz.org,” the organization said.

The shelter has not released additional information about Mimi’s medical condition or treatment plan.
