Severn woman wins $30K from gifted scratch-off during family visit

A scratch-off gift from a sick relative delivered a $30,000 surprise for one lucky Severn woman.

SEVERN, Md. — A woman from Anne Arundel County turned a $3 scratch-off ticket into a $30,000 windfall after receiving it as a gift from a family member during a visit in March.

Key Points

  • Severn woman won $30,000 from a gifted Bonus Crossword scratch-off
  • The ticket was handed to her by a relative during a family visit
  • Prize-winning ticket was purchased at a 7-Eleven in Capitol Heights

The Severn resident, a medical professional, told Maryland Lottery officials on April 7 that she received the ticket while visiting a sick relative. The Bonus Crossword game was purchased by the relative earlier that day and handed to her as a parting gift.

Later that evening, she scratched the ticket and realized it might be a top-prize winner. “I knew what I was seeing couldn’t be real, so I didn’t get too excited,” she said, recounting her disbelief. She secured the ticket until she could confirm the results with the relative.

Family reaction confirmed win

She waited until a later visit to show the ticket to the family member. “I watched his face when I showed him the ticket. That told me all I needed to know,” she said.

The winning ticket marked the first top prize claimed from the 7th edition of the Bonus Crossword game, which launched in February. The ticket was purchased at the 7-Eleven at 8810 Hampton Mall Drive in Capitol Heights.

Top prize still available

According to the Maryland Lottery, seven top prizes of $30,000 and 15 second-tier $5,000 prizes remain unclaimed. The retailer received a $300 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
