Sheepshead Bay Lawyer Indicted for Embezzling Client Funds

July 10, 2024

BROOKLYN, NY — Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced today the indictment of 66-year-old Alan Ross, a former personal injury attorney from Sheepshead Bay, for allegedly embezzling over $250,000 from eight clients. Ross, who fled the United States and was disbarred in 2019, has been charged with multiple counts of grand larceny and possession of stolen property.

Ross was arraigned before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo on a 10-count indictment, including second-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree grand larceny, seven counts of third-degree grand larceny, and first-degree scheme to defraud. He has been released under supervision and is scheduled to return to court on September 25, 2024.

According to District Attorney Gonzalez, between December 2015 and May 2019, Ross allegedly diverted approximately $253,000 of settlement funds from his clients’ escrow accounts to his law firm’s operating account and his personal account. The misappropriated funds were reportedly used for personal expenses, including over $52,000 on a vacation to Aruba and $3,000 on laser micro-surgery.

Ross was arrested last month at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after fleeing the country. He waived extradition to New York where he now faces charges related to his alleged criminal activities. The District Attorney emphasized that such criminal conduct within the legal profession is intolerable and vowed to hold Ross accountable for his actions.
