NYPD seeks woman accused of injuring employee during Manhattan escape
NEW YORK, NY – A suspected shoplifting attempt inside a Manhattan store turned violent last month when a woman allegedly struck a 74-year-old employee in the face with an umbrella after he tried to stop her from leaving with unpaid merchandise, according to the NYPD.
The incident happened July 9 at approximately 4:25 p.m. inside a commercial establishment at 826 Avenue of the Americas.
Police said the unidentified woman attempted to leave the business without paying for merchandise.
When the 74-year-old employee intervened, the woman allegedly hit him in the face with an umbrella.
Worker suffers mouth injury
The blow caused pain and a laceration to the employee’s mouth, according to police.
The woman then fled the store on foot and remained sought in an NYPD Crime Stoppers alert issued this week.
Police are investigating the incident as a robbery.
The NYPD did not disclose the value or type of merchandise involved in the encounter.
