STAMFORD, CT — Stamford Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at 77 Prospect Street on Saturday at 9:19 PM. Firefighters arrived four minutes later to discover a floor sanding machine ablaze in a first-floor apartment.

The fire, which was promptly extinguished using portable extinguishers, resulted in significant smoke spreading to the building’s lobby and hallway as residents of the 12-story, 140-unit building evacuated.

Two residents were treated for medical issues caused by the smoke and evacuation. The fire was declared under control at 9:34 PM. Stamford EMS transported the individuals to Stamford Hospital for further assessment.

The incident prompted a second alarm response, bringing 43 firefighters, six engines, two ladder trucks, a heavy rescue unit, one deputy chief, and a safety officer to the scene.

Additionally, Stamford EMS provided a paramedic supervisor and three ambulances, while Stamford Police managed traffic by closing Prospect Street. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Division.
