STAMFORD, CT – A 68-year-old man was taken into custody late Tuesday night after a shooting in the Morgan Street area left one person injured, according to the Stamford Police Department.
Around 10:04 p.m., officers were dispatched to the vicinity of 1 Strawberry Hill Court following reports of a man running southbound on Morgan Street while armed with a handgun. As officers responded, additional 911 calls reported shots fired near the Tully Center.
Police in the area investigating an unrelated matter heard a man shouting that he had been shot. Officers located the victim and administered medical aid. The victim, who sustained a gunshot wound to the hand, was transported to Stamford Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Other officers soon encountered a man identified as Raymond Downey, 68, walking southbound on Morgan Street holding a black handgun. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, Downey initially failed to comply and continued walking toward officers before eventually placing the firearm on the ground. Police detained him without further incident once he stepped away from the weapon.
Investigators established several crime scenes across the area, recovering shell casings and a firearm. Detectives from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Crime Scene Unit processed the evidence and assisted with the case.
Downey was charged with assault in the first degree, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, and breach of peace.
