UTICA, NY – On March 5th, 2024, Utica Police responded to an incident at the North Utica Walmart involving fraudulent merchandise returns. Michael MacDonald, 36, of Oneida, was detained after attempting to return items to the store using a receipt from a different Walmart location.
Investigations revealed MacDonald had selected items within the Utica Walmart, placed them in a shopping cart, and then attempted to return them at customer service using a receipt for identical items previously purchased elsewhere. His actions prompted store staff to detain him and contact the police.
Following a review by the Utica Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, MacDonald’s actions were classified as felonious. He was transported to the Utica Police Department, facing charges of Falsifying Business Records and Petit Larceny. This case underscores the vigilance of retail operations and law enforcement in identifying and addressing fraudulent activities.
