76-year-old cyclist killed after being struck by SUV on New Hampshire Avenue

Gaithersburg, MD — A 76-year-old Silver Spring man was killed Thursday afternoon after being struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle along the shoulder of New Hampshire Avenue, police announced Friday.

The Montgomery County Department of Police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit identified the victim as Robert Sheldon Boethling. The crash occurred around 2 p.m. in the 15200 block of New Hampshire Avenue, where officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to reports of a collision involving a red 2012 Toyota RAV4 and a cyclist.

Preliminary findings indicate that Boethling had been riding his bike on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes when he was hit by the Toyota, which was also traveling northbound. The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.

Boethling was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Toyota remained on scene. Investigators have not yet released additional details or confirmed whether any charges are pending.
