Senior citizen sets trap and catches thief in retirement home

Maintenance worker arrested for stealing from elderly resident at Delaware senior living facility

Greenville, DE — A maintenance employee at a senior living community in Greenville has been arrested after he was caught on camera stealing from a resident, including prescription medication and part of the resident’s own surveillance system.

John Oboyle, 50, of Newark, was arrested by Delaware State Police on December 17 after an investigation into multiple thefts at Stonegates Senior Living Community, located at 4031 Kennett Pike.

The investigation began after a resident reported that medicine and other items had been going missing from their home on several occasions. In response, the resident installed a camera system with both visible and hidden surveillance equipment. On December 15, the system captured Oboyle — a maintenance worker at the facility — entering the home without a valid reason and stealing prescription drugs and part of the newly installed camera equipment.

Though Oboyle had authorized access to the property in his capacity as a maintenance employee, police determined he had no legitimate reason to be inside the resident’s home at the time of the incident.

Just reported, New Jersey detectives trying to identify person of interest.

Troopers located and arrested Oboyle in Newark and transported him to Troop 1. He was formally charged with multiple felony offenses, including second-degree burglary, theft of a controlled substance, and theft from a senior victim. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on a $6,000 unsecured bond.
