CLAYTON, DE – A 19-year-old man walking with his bicycle along Wheatley’s Pond Road was struck and killed Tuesday morning when a pickup truck left its lane and hit him on the shoulder.

The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. near Bryn Zion Road, according to Delaware State Police.

Investigators said a Chevrolet Silverado was heading south when it drifted out of its lane and struck the pedestrian, who was also traveling south in the shoulder.

The young man from Clayton was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, and his name is being withheld until family members are notified.

The driver, a 64-year-old man from Smyrna, was not injured in the collision.

Road closed for investigation

Troopers shut down Wheatley’s Pond Road for nearly three hours as the scene was processed and evidence collected.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police have not yet determined why the vehicle left the roadway.

Authorities have not indicated whether charges are being considered against the driver.
