Teen vanishes during snowstorm then found safe in woods by K9 unit after massive search
BEL AIR, MD — A 15-year-old boy who vanished from his home during a raging snowstorm was found alive in a wooded area after a desperate search involving police, a bloodhound, and multiple emergency agencies, the Bel Air Police Department announced Saturday.
The teen disappeared between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, slipping away without his family’s knowledge as a powerful winter storm swept through the region. With freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall blanketing the area, officials feared for his safety, especially due to nearby waterways and hazardous weather conditions.
Officers launched a full-scale effort to locate the teen, canvassing the area on foot, tracking footprints in the snow, interviewing witnesses, and coordinating with local and state emergency teams. Body-worn camera footage released by the department shows scenes from the tense hours-long operation.
The breakthrough came when Maryland State Police Senior Trooper Taylor Bracken and his bloodhound partner, K9 Margo, joined the search. The dog’s tracking abilities led officers to a wooded area where the juvenile was eventually located and safely recovered after enduring extended exposure to the elements.
He was immediately taken for a medical evaluation as a precaution.
Officials credited the rescue to quick coordination, specialized tracking resources, and the cooperation of multiple agencies, including the Harford County Sheriff’s Office and the Harford County Department of Emergency Services. Community members who provided key tips also played a role in the successful outcome.
The teen has since been reunited with his family.
