This New Jersey Non-Profit Movie Theater Now Sells Booze with that Popcorn

May 7, 2024

RED BANK, NJ— Raise your hand if you ever snuck booze into a movie theater in New Jersey. You might not know this, but you no longer have to sneak, especially here at the Jersey Shore as the state’s first independently owned alcohol serving theater is now a reality.

Basie Center Cinemas, the only independent movie theater in the area licensed to serve alcohol, has started offering drinks to its patrons. Located on White Street, this historic twin cinema operated by the nonprofit Count Basie Center organization now provides a selection of alcoholic beverages, including wine, local craft beers, and canned cocktails, to moviegoers over the age of 21.

The cinema, which has been a staple for film enthusiasts since the 1950s, will predominantly feature beverages from local breweries and wineries. This initiative follows the enactment of a law in 2023, which permits nonprofit movie theaters focused on promoting the performing arts to obtain liquor licenses. Basie Center Cinemas combines traditional Hollywood screenings with unique offerings like open mic comedy nights, film festivals, and interactive late-night showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Facing challenges in the post-COVID era, the theater regards the ability to serve alcohol as a crucial development for its survival and growth. The addition of a liquor license is expected to enhance the cinematic experience and attract more visitors. Izzy Sackowitz, the Chief Operating Officer of the Count Basie Center, expressed optimism about this new service boosting the theater’s appeal and its broader cultural engagements.

The cinema is also planning future events to further engage the community, including a Hispanic heritage film festival. Additionally, Basie Center Cinemas remains available for private events such as birthday parties and corporate gatherings, further utilizing its historic venue to promote various forms of entertainment and community involvement.
