Three charged in K2 smuggling plot targeting Allegheny County Jail

PITTSBURGH, PA – Three men are facing charges after county detectives uncovered a plan to smuggle synthetic cannabinoids, commonly known as K2, into the Allegheny County Jail using a snack bag as cover, authorities announced Monday.

Investigators said the scheme began last month when detectives received intelligence that two inmates, 31-year-old Tyreace Platt and 39-year-old Chaz Coles, were coordinating an attempt to introduce drugs into the jail. Both men were already in custody at the time.

On February 2, detectives reviewing jail communications learned that Platt and Coles were working with a third person outside the facility. The plan involved hiding K2 inside an open bag of Doritos in the restroom of a local magistrate’s office, timed with Coles’s preliminary hearing the next day.

At about 9:30 a.m. on February 3, detectives staked out the magistrate’s office and observed 33-year-old Tyrique Craighead entering the building. After Craighead exited the bathroom, investigators confronted him and searched his belongings, finding the Doritos bag filled with rolled paper containing suspected contraband. Subsequent testing confirmed the material was synthetic cannabinoids.

All three men have been charged in connection with the failed smuggling attempt. The investigation remains ongoing.
