Today is a Day New Jerseyans Might Fear Do Something Nice Day

TRENTON, NJ – Deep down inside, New Jerseyans are warm, lovable and caring people. But, once we get behind the wheel, on a long line or waiting in traffic, all the rules of humanity are thrown out the window.

Today is the day to change that.

After all, today is Do Something Nice Day. Yes, that’s a thing.

Every year, we celebrate National Do Something Nice Day on October 5, promoting goodwill and simple acts of kindness.

Though reminiscent of National Random Acts of Kindness Day observed on February 17, National Do Something Nice Day places a special emphasis on the deliberate acts of kindness that can make a significant difference in someone’s day.

In an era dominated by busy schedules and fast-paced lifestyles, such gestures might often be overlooked. Yet, kindness remains an essential virtue.

As Frank A. Clark aptly put it, “Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.”

Acts of kindness, no matter how small, have the potential to shift the trajectory of a person’s day, even our own. Here are some simple yet impactful gestures that can be easily incorporated into daily life:

  • Allowing a driver to merge into your lane when they signal.
  • Bringing in the neighbor’s newspaper during your morning walk, placing it closer to their door.
  • Holding the door open for someone behind you.
  • Letting someone with fewer items go ahead of you in line.
  • Offering a tip slightly more generously than usual to service staff.
  • Sharing a genuine compliment with a colleague or stranger.
