TOMS RIVER, NJ — Two Toms River Township employees are being commended for helping a 6-year-old boy reach school safely after his mother experienced a medical episode during their walk.

Ed Kempker and Louis Reed noticed the child in distress on the first morning of school and immediately stepped in to help.

The employees calmed and comforted the boy before helping him cross the busy intersection at Vaughn Avenue. They then made sure he arrived safely and on time at East Dover Elementary School.

Mayor Daniel T. Rodrick and East Dover Elementary Principal Matthew H. Gray praised Kempker and Reed for their quick response and compassion.

“We thank Ed and Louis for their extraordinary act of service,” Mayor Rodrick said. “Toms River is fortunate to have these gentlemen serving our community.”
