TOMS RIVER, NJ — Toms River Recreation is offering two hands-on programs for children this fall, including a one-night caramel apple workshop and a six-week LEGO robotics and coding course.
Both programs will be held at the Toms River Youth Services Building, 1505 North Bay Avenue. Advance registration is required.
Children can create caramel apples and cookies
“Fun, Fruity, & Sweet” will run from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, for children ages 7 through 11.
Participants will dip apples in caramel, roll them in toppings and decorate school bus-shaped cookies with icing and piping. The township describes the workshop as a fun, educational and safe introduction to culinary activities.
Children can also make an apple-themed treat for a teacher. Registration costs $28 per child.
LEGO robotics classes begin Oct. 6
Toms River is also partnering with Built By Me STEM Learning for two LEGO robotics and coding courses. Each program costs $180 per student and is limited to 10 children.
The Amazing Engineers class is designed for students in grades 2 and 3. Sessions will run from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Nov. 10 and 17.
Children will work in pairs with LEGO Spike Essential Robotics Sets to construct models such as swings and submarines. Students will identify problems, develop possible solutions and test their designs while learning basic programming and engineering concepts.
Older students explore space through coding
Adventures in Space is open to students in grades 3 through 5. Classes will run from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. on the same six dates.
Students will build space-themed projects, including lunar rovers, and use Scratch MIT block-based coding to navigate obstacles. The course will focus on building, programming, testing and refining LEGO prototypes.
There will be no class Nov. 3.
