Toms river post office to make way for 10-story mega-structure

TOMS RIVER-A rendering created by the Township of Toms River depicts the razing of the United States Post Office and being replaced by a 10-story megastructure that dwarfs the currently planned 1,000 unit apartment complex in the works across the street.

Toms River officials are already discussing the plans for a new post office to be built on Hooper Avenue to replace the existing post office that is currently located on Water Street in the downtown section of the town.

At the August 20th land use committee meeting, the board discussed the project and have requested a meeting with the United States Postal Service to discuss the proposed layout for the new building. While the effort to rebuild and revitalize the downtown center by attracting more visitors and residents to the downtown section, relocating the post office away from downtown will remove one of the area’s biggest activity anchors.

Maurice Hill, candidate for Mayor said relocating the Toms River Post Office to a more centrally convenient location will reduce that traffic downtown and provide more convenient access to postal services for the majority of residents. Downtown dwellers in the newly proposed 1,000 apartment unit complex, will, of course, have to travel north for their postal services.

In the township’s redevelopment plan, the post office is replaced with a 10-story megastructure in renderings commissioned by the township.
