TRENTON, NJ – A Trenton man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his girlfriend multiple times before fleeing across state lines in her car, authorities said Monday.
Prosecutors said 36-year-old Lamont Truitt turned himself in to Trenton Police on Sunday following an investigation by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department.
Truitt is accused of fatally shooting 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy during an argument early Sunday morning in a parked car on Coolidge Avenue.
Investigators said Murphy was sitting inside a silver Toyota Camry with a 25-year-old friend when Truitt approached and began arguing before pulling out a handgun and firing several rounds.
The friend, who was shot in the leg, managed to escape and was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Police said Truitt then entered Murphy’s vehicle and drove away, triggering an intensive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Roughly two hours after the shooting, Lower Makefield Township Police in Pennsylvania discovered the silver Toyota Camry parked near East Ferry Road and the Delaware Canal.
Inside, officers found Murphy’s body, confirming she had been fatally shot.
Truitt was later charged with first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree carjacking, two counts of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and other related firearm offenses.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said it has filed a motion to detain Truitt pending trial.
Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey credited the cooperation of the Lower Makefield Township Police Department and the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office for their role in locating the vehicle and assisting in the investigation.
Detective Luis Vega of the Mercer County Homicide Task Force is leading the case. Officials are urging anyone with additional information to contact the task force or submit tips anonymously online through the prosecutor’s website.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to examine evidence recovered from the vehicle and surrounding area.
