TRENTON, NJ – A months-long investigation by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and Trenton Police Department has led to the arrest of a city man charged with the murder of Anthony White. Authorities announced that Donnell Carmicheal, 38, surrendered to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office on July 1 and now faces one count of first-degree murder.
According to Mercer County Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey and Trenton Police Director Steve Wilson, Carmicheal is being held at the Mercer County Correction Center. Prosecutors have filed a motion to detain him pending trial, and a hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Missing person case became homicide investigation
The investigation began after Anthony White, 35, of Cuyler Avenue in Trenton, was reported missing by family members on March 19. On April 1, officers responded to a vacant residence at 409 Walnut Avenue, where White was found deceased.
An autopsy conducted by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office determined White’s death was a homicide caused by blunt impact injuries and strangulation. Investigators continued gathering evidence over the following months before identifying Carmicheal as the suspect.
What happens next
Carmicheal remains held at the Mercer County Correction Center while awaiting his detention hearing. If the court grants the prosecutor’s motion, he will remain in custody as the murder case proceeds through the criminal justice system.
Authorities have not released additional information about a possible motive or the circumstances that led to White’s death.
