LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Two people were airlifted to trauma centers Sunday night after a head-on crash involving two vehicles on Route 539 in Lacey Township.
Firefighters were dispatched to the area of mile marker 16 at about 8:50 p.m. and arrived to find three people involved in the wreck. Whiting firefighters and the Forked River Fire Department worked together at the scene as Lacey and Manchester EMS crews treated the injured.
One patient was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. The injuries to the other two were serious enough to require helicopters.

Medical Helicopters Called to Route 539
RWJ LifeFlight and New Jersey State Police SouthSTAR responded to transport the two patients to separate trauma centers.
Fire crews secured the damaged vehicles while assisting EMS with patient care. An engine from Forked River was sent to establish a nearby landing zone, with Whiting firefighters later assisting there after clearing the crash scene.
Fire police kept Route 539 secured during the emergency response.
The fire departments did not release the names of the three people involved or provide additional information about their conditions.
Lacey Township Police took over the scene to investigate the collision. No preliminary cause was announced.
