Two Killed in Crash on Virginia Route 5 During Evening Rush

Virginia State Police are investigating a double fatal crash that occurred Thursday afternoon on Route 5 (John Tyler Memorial Highway) in Charles City County. The incident took place just east of the intersection with Tomahund Drive at approximately 5:25 p.m.

A 2005 Acura TSX traveling eastbound on Route 5 veered off the road and collided with a tree. The driver, Shawnell Eley, 40, from Yorktown, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that Eley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. A nine-year-old male passenger from Williamsburg, Va., also succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

Two other juvenile passengers suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond. The condition of the injured individuals remains critical.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by Virginia State Police.
