Unique Spotless Giraffe Born at Brights Zoo in Tennessee

September 1, 2023

Limestone, Tenn. – A newborn giraffe at Brights Zoo has defied the norms of its species by being born without the characteristic brown spots.

The female reticulated giraffe was born on July 31 and has been the subject of interest among giraffe experts. According to Brights Zoo, this calf is believed to be the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe in existence globally.

David Bright, the zoo’s director, stated that the zoo staff are in consultation with zoo professionals nationwide to determine the rarity of the calf’s condition. Records indicate that the only other instance of a spotless reticulated giraffe occurred in Japan in the 1970s.

Typically, giraffes inherit their spot patterns from their mothers, making this new birth an especially rare occurrence. Brights Zoo is eagerly monitoring the giraffe’s development and health.

The unique birth has been reported by WJHL 11 News and is anticipated to attract researchers and visitors interested in the peculiarities of animal genetics.
