Vandals cause severe damage to America’s southernmost landmark in Key West

KEY WEST, FL – Since 1983, America’s southernmost buoy has represented the furthest south location in the mainland United States. This weekend, two men decided to burn it, causing extensive damage. Vandals set a Christmas tree on fire next to the landmark, burning it.

“Key West Police are seeking two while males suspected of criminal mischief. Sometime between 3 and 3:30 a.m. two suspects placed a Christmas tree in front of the Southernmost Buoy and lit it on fire. The fire caused extensive damage to the iconic landmark. The Key West Fire Department extinguished the fire,” the Key West Police Department said.

The buoy was damaged in 2017 during Hurricane Irma, but it was refurbished and repainted by the original artist. Cuba lies just 90 miles south of the buoy.

The incident is under investigation. If anyone can provide details, they are asked to contact the Key West Police at 305-809-1000.
