Virginia man crosses state line to claim 000 Maryland Lottery win

BALTIMORE, MD – A quick trip across the Potomac River turned into a big payday for a Virginia man who claimed a $50,000 top prize from the Maryland Lottery after buying a lucky ticket in Prince George’s County.

The Alexandria resident said his journey to visit relatives in Maryland last month led him to AJ Liquors in Brentwood, where he picked up a $5 Cash Scratch Fever ticket that revealed the game’s top prize.

“I try my luck every week, either scratch-offs or at the casino,” the maintenance supervisor said Oct. 3 when collecting his winnings at Lottery headquarters. “But nothing like this has ever happened before.”

He explained that he’d played Cash Scratch Fever earlier in the year with modest success before taking a break. “I thought maybe my luck had built back up,” he said. “Turns out, it did.”

A winning stop in Brentwood

The $5 scratch-off ticket was purchased from AJ Liquors at 3801 Bladensburg Road, which will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winner.

The player said he plans to deposit his winnings directly into savings. “I’ve been wanting to build up my savings for years but could never get ahead. Now I can rest a little easier.”

More prizes still up for grabs

According to lottery officials, four more $50,000 top prizes remain for Cash Scratch Fever players, along with 11 second-tier prizes worth $5,000 each.
