Fatal crash on Suitland Parkway leaves Maryland man dead

Washington, DC – A violent crossover crash on Suitland Parkway ended in tragedy Friday evening when a vehicle crossed the median and collided with oncoming traffic, leaving a Maryland man dead.

The collision occurred around 4:54 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Suitland Parkway east of the Stanton Road Southeast intersection. Officers responding to the scene found two injured occupants inside a 2006 Acura TL and an uninjured driver in a 2014 Honda CRV.

Investigators said the Acura had been traveling westbound when it mounted the center median and struck a traffic pole. After hitting the pole, the vehicle entered the eastbound lanes, where it collided with the Honda traveling in the opposite direction.

Emergency crews transported the adult male driver of the Acura to a hospital with non life threatening injuries. The passenger, later identified as 53-year-old Darwin Thomas of Waldorf, Maryland, was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts failed.
