Washington D.C. Man Sentenced for 2022 Shooting of Ex-Girlfriend and Her Family

March 23, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – On Thursday, March 21, Raekwon Sutton, a 26-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., received a 17-year prison sentence for his involvement in a 2022 shooting in Southeast Washington. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Sutton’s conviction on multiple assault and firearms-related charges followed a jury trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, presided over by the Honorable Lynn Leibovitz on October 3, 2023.

Prosecutors presented evidence indicating that Sutton, fueled by anger and armed with a handgun, targeted his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on March 19, 2022. In the attack, he discharged ten rounds at the apartment’s front door while two of her family members were inside. Leading up to the violent act, Sutton sent numerous text and voice messages to his ex-girlfriend, threatening to shoot at her apartment. He continued his threatening behavior after the shooting, warning her of his intent to return and fire more shots at the apartment.
