West Virginia woman’s hunch leads to $325K Virginia Lottery jackpot

A Harpers Ferry resident says a feeling she couldn’t ignore led her to buy the winning ticket for a six-figure Cash 5 jackpot.

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — A West Virginia woman turned a gut feeling into a $325,852 lottery payday after purchasing a winning Virginia Lottery Cash 5 with EZ Match ticket in Loudoun County.

Tetyana Balcerowicz of Harpers Ferry said something told her to buy a ticket for the May 21 drawing, and that instinct proved to be right.

The winning ticket was purchased at Sweet Springs Country Store, located at 34357 Charles Town Pike in Purcellville.

“I had to triple check it [the ticket] to make sure it wasn’t too good to be true!” Balcerowicz told lottery officials. “I was surprised that I was the lucky one this time.”

Balcerowicz used Easy Pick, allowing the lottery terminal to randomly select her numbers. The winning combination was 1, 2, 5, 38 and 44.

She told lottery officials she plans to use the money to pay off debts.

Cash 5 with EZ Match features a rolling jackpot that starts at $200,000 and grows until won. The odds of matching all five numbers to claim the jackpot are 1 in 1,221,759.

Virginia Lottery proceeds support K-12 education throughout the Commonwealth. Loudoun County, where the winning ticket was sold, received more than $28.8 million in lottery funding for public schools during the last fiscal year. Statewide, the Virginia Lottery generated more than $901 million for K-12 education in Fiscal Year 2025.
