WHITE PLAINS, NY – A Yonkers man has been formally charged in connection with a New Year’s Eve 2021 killing that remained unsolved for years, as prosecutors announced a grand jury indictment tied to the death of 49-year-old Shawn Jefferson.
Shawn McLaurin, 43, was indicted and arraigned Wednesday on a murder charge stemming from the fatal incident in White Plains. The case, long considered a cold case, saw renewed progress through a multi-agency investigation involving local and federal partners.
Cold case investigation leads to arrest
According to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the indictment follows years of investigative work led by White Plains Public Safety, with support from the DA’s Cold Case Bureau and Criminal Investigators Squad, along with the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.
“This indictment is the result of years of exceptional work and steadfast partnership with White Plains Public Safety, which led the extensive investigation with invaluable assistance from the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Bureau and Criminal Investigators Squad, as well as the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force,” the office stated in its announcement.
Officials said the coordinated effort ultimately led to McLaurin’s arrest and the presentation of evidence before a grand jury, resulting in the formal charge.
DA cites ongoing push for accountability
District Attorney Susan Cacace acknowledged the prolonged impact of the case on the victim’s family while emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration in solving violent crimes.
“While nothing can erase the immense grief Shawn Jefferson’s family has suffered, today’s actions bring us one step closer to holding the defendant accused of this vicious crime accountable,” said District Attorney Susan Cacace. “Our law enforcement partnerships remain critical in solving cold cases and ensuring violent offender are brought to justice.”
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the killing or what new evidence led to the indictment. The case now proceeds through the court system following McLaurin’s arraignment.
