Wildfire forces evacuations, threatens homes in Jackson Township

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A wildfire in Jackson Township’s forested area near South Stump Tavern Road has prompted evacuations and road closures as state fire officials work to contain the rapidly spreading blaze. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service, which responded to the scene Wednesday, is using a backfiring operation to slow the fire’s progress.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire had grown to multiple acres with zero containment reported. Officials estimate the blaze could reach 300 acres before it is brought under control.

Fifteen structures along South Stump Tavern Road have been evacuated, and an additional 25 structures remain under threat as the fire service continues its containment efforts. South Stump Tavern Road has been closed to traffic, and authorities are urging residents to avoid the area.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has deployed fire engines, bulldozers, ground crews, and a helicopter for aerial observation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire service is expected to provide additional updates as containment efforts progress.
